Sakaja Rolls Out Smart Anti-Vandal Litter Bins in Nairobi CBD

June 9, 2025

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s administration has rolled out a fresh wave of modern litter bins across the city’s central business district (CBD).

On the night of Friday, June 6, City Hall officers quietly rolled out a new fleet of 110-litre Glasdon Jubilee litter bins at key points in the CBD. These bins, crafted from heat- and tamper-resistant Durapol material, are a major upgrade from the smaller versions introduced just weeks earlier.

Designed with Nairobi’s urban challenges in mind, the bins feature a domed top to keep out rainwater and a secure three-point locking system to prevent tampering or unauthorized access. To discourage the city’s rampant problem of illegal advertising, each bin has a special anti-posting finish to resist flyers and posters.

Inside, the bins are lined with corrosion-resistant plastic, and some models come with lightweight polyethylene components to boost durability and extend their service life.

The initial rollout covers Nairobi’s busiest areas, but Governor Sakaja confirmed that more bins will be deployed in residential neighbourhoods, public parks, and transport terminals in the coming weeks.

While inspecting the new bins, Governor Sakaja underscored the broader goal behind the project.

“These are not just bins. They’re a statement about the Nairobi we’re building, one that values order, hygiene, and modernity,” he said.

He emphasized that while the county is investing in modern waste management solutions, lasting change will only come when Nairobians take personal responsibility.

“We’re investing in modern infrastructure, but real change will come when wananchi also take responsibility and dispose of their waste properly,” Sakaja added.

This rollout comes ahead of the launch of Green Nairobi Company Ltd., a newly formed autonomous agency that will manage waste collection and environmental services across the capital.
