Inside the Coast Syndicate That Stalked Bank Clients and Stole Millions from Cars

June 3, 2025

Detectives in Kenya’s Coast region have dismantled a highly organized criminal gang accused of trailing bank customers and using advanced technology to steal from their vehicles. The nine suspects, believed to be part of a syndicate operating across Mombasa, Kilifi, and neighboring counties, were arrested after a weeks-long intelligence-driven operation by the National Police Service (NPS).

The suspects, aged between 26 and 30, are linked to a wave of car break-ins that specifically targeted individuals who had withdrawn large sums of money from banks. Coast Regional Police Commander Ali Nuno confirmed the arrests and outlined the syndicate’s well-coordinated tactics.

“Following an outbreak of unlocked motor vehicle thefts, where large amounts of money were stolen within Mombasa, Kilifi and neighbouring counties, the NPS, with the help of members of the public, gathered information,” said Nuno. “This information was developed into actionable intelligence, which was followed by an intelligence-led operation.”

The operation began on May 22, 2025, and focused on neutralizing the gang suspected of orchestrating the sophisticated thefts. A court has since granted a custodial order to hold the suspects as investigations continue.

Inside the Syndicate’s Sophisticated Strategy

According to police, the gang operated with military-like coordination. It deployed its members in small units, typically in pairs or trios. The first team would pose as regular customers inside banks, discreetly identifying individuals who withdrew large amounts of cash. Once they singled out a target, they alerted a second team stationed outside.

“They then pursue the victim until the point of vulnerability and hand them over to another team called the ‘strikers’,” Commander Nuno explained.

This final team carried out the actual break-ins. Using a specialized electronic device, they disabled the alarm systems of victims’ vehicles, often in broad daylight. The gadget interferes with the locking mechanism, allowing the gang to access cars without any signs of forced entry and leaving victims clueless until it was too late.

Recovered items linked to a Coast region syndicate that trailed bank customers and stole valuables from their vehicles.

Police have linked the gang to numerous incidents across the region. The group’s strategic presence around financial institutions allowed them to blend in unnoticed and strike with precision.

In a major breakthrough, police recovered eight vehicles believed to have been used during the crimes or acquired through the stolen funds.

Investigators flagged several of these vehicles for irregular registration. Some had Kenyan number plates that do not appear in the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) database, raising suspicions of smuggling or fraudulent registration.

Assets, Arrests, and Ongoing Investigations

Further searches at the suspects’ homes unearthed assorted items valued at over Ksh7.5 million. This figure excludes the estimated worth of the recovered vehicles. Authorities believe these goods are proceeds of crime.

The suspects were also found to own real estate, both developed and undeveloped, whose value appears suspiciously high considering their ages and questionable sources of income.

Adding to the seriousness of the case, Commander Nuno revealed that one of the arrested suspects is currently facing murder charges in a neighboring country. This revelation has prompted police to treat the operation as part of a broader, possibly transnational, criminal enterprise.

All nine suspects are believed to reside in Mtwapa and its surrounding areas. Commander Nuno indicated that due to the complex nature of the case, the police may enlist support from other investigative and intelligence agencies to broaden the scope of the investigation.

He also urged the public to assist the ongoing probe: “We appeal to members of the public who may have been victims of these crimes to come forward, record statements, and assist us in identifying the suspects.”

Nuno commended the role of community members in cracking the case, emphasizing that public vigilance and cooperation played a pivotal role.

“The success and milestone achieved in this case would not have been possible without the support from members of the public,” he said.
