A quiet village in Busia County has found itself at the center of heavenly headlines after a local woman boldly declared she is the reincarnation of Mary, the Mother of Jesus.
Judith Nafula, a former devout Catholic from Nangoma village in Matayos constituency, says her divine promotion came after a powerful spiritual awakening. According to her, she was peacefully going about life until the Holy Spirit knocked from the heavens.
Speaking to reporters with the conviction of a seasoned prophetess, Nafula described the moment her life changed forever.
“Light ilitoka juu ikashuka chini na sauti ikatoka katikati ikasema mimi ni Kristo nimetumwa na Baba ninatafuta Mama Maria. Nikamjibu, mimi sijui Mama Maria akaniambia ni wewe, ni kitu ambayo ilikuwa imejificha na wakati umewadia uweze kujitambulisha,” she said.
Loosely translates to: (“A light came down from the sky and a voice in the middle of it said, ‘I am Christ, sent by the Father. I am looking for Mother Mary.’ I told him I didn’t know her and He replied, ‘You are the one. It’s something that had been hidden, but now the time has come for you to reveal yourself.”)
After this divine revelation, Nafula said she was led by the Spirit to a nearby hill, where she stayed in solitude for two months, praying and chatting daily with the Holy Spirit.
Husband Not Left Out
Her husband, John Wekulo, wasn’t left out of the holy plot. Though initially shocked by his wife’s supposed spiritual calling, Wekulo later claimed he too had a vision, one that anointed him as Joseph, the biblical spouse of Mary.
But while heaven may have welcomed her new identity, her church wasn’t as enthusiastic. Her claims of miraculous powers ruffled feathers. The congregation accused her of losing her mind and promptly showed her the door.
Yet some family members insist she’s the real deal. Her sister-in-law vouched for her, saying, “People who couldn’t conceive now have children. The sick are recovering. People are finally seeing her gift.”
News of the self-proclaimed Holy Mother spread like wildfire, drawing curious crowds from surrounding areas. Locals now visit Nafula’s homestead, not just for the drama, but for prayers, miracles and maybe a selfie with modern-day Mary.
Whether divinely chosen or dramatically delusional, Judith Nafula has certainly made Nangoma village a holy hotspot.
