At exactly 9:15am Saturday morning, Kenyan marathon runner Eliud Kipchoge started his 42km journey to break the ultimate record in a marathon.

In his second attempt, Kipchoge was seeking to become the first human to run a marathon in under 2 hours.

Dubbed INEOS 1:59 Challenge, the race was taking place in Vienna, Austria, bankrolled by the multi-billion dollar chemicals company INEOS.

The race was greatly anticipated by Kenyans and worldwide fans of the sport alike. Large screens streamed the run live in Nairobi, Eldoret and other towns.

At exactly 11:15 am, Eliud did what no man has ever done. The clocked stopped at 1:59:40.2.

He finished with a whole 20 seconds to spare.
