A member of the Kisii County Assembly has denied sending a condolence message to KCPE candidates in his ward.
Ichuni Ward MCA Gekonge Mirieri was the butt of the joke after he sent the condolence card instead of a success card to candidates at Bogeche Primary School on Monday morning.
One of the teachers at the school realised it was a condolence card when he opened it to read to the candidates who were doing rehearsals ahead of the examinations that kicked off on Tuesday.
The card read: “We are deeply sorry for the loss. Please accept our heartfelt sympathies for your loss. Our thoughts are with your family during this difficult times.”
A photo of the card has since gone viral on social media, with users making fun of the Ward Rep who is a former teacher and owner of a private school.
Some parents of the candidates said they were shocked by the MCA’s card.
John Obegi accused Mirieri of ignorance for sending what he described as inappropriate material to their children.
How can an elected leader do such things to our children? This thing is unheard of and let him know that we are not happy with him,” said Obegi.
Another parent, John Ogangi, added: “It is unheard of for a leader of his calibre to do such a thing. Personally am stunned by the act.”
A teacher at the school said the school received the condolence card from one of the villagers on Monday morning.
“We got many other cards but as usual we gave Mheshimiwa’s card some preference only to realise it was a condolence card,” he said.
The teacher said they have since counselled the candidates and explained to them that the Ward rep might have mistakenly sent the wrong card.
The MCA has denied sending the card and accused political detractors of replacing his success card to paint him in a negative light.
“I couldn’t do that my friend, that is the work of people, some of them former competitors,”Mireri told the Nation by phone.
He vowed to ask the police to launch investigations with a view to having the suspect arrested and prosecuted.
