Police in Chuka are investigating a case in which Mwonge area chief allegedly beat a young man who was later found dead outside a mosque.
Area chief, David Gitonga is said to have arrested Murithi Kathuni over claims of threatening his mother over family property.
According to residents, the administrator and one of the village elders beat up Mr Murithi Kathini before transferring him to the chief’s camp.
They later presented him to police but officers reportedly refused to lock him up and demanded he be taken to the hospital as he was seriously injured.
He was found dead shortly after he was arrested outside a mosque, less than 200 meters from the police station.
Confirming the incident, Tharaka Nithi County Police Commander Mary Wangui said investigations were still underway. She urged members of public who may have witnessed the assault to provide information.
