nkuIt is emerging that the guy who showed Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza the door yesterday was a former ambassador to Kenya.

Major-General Godefroid Niyombare announced on radio that the President had been removed from office for seeking an unlawful third term.

Just last year, Maj Gen Godefroid was appointed ambassador to Kenya, and this photo posted by President Uhuru on Facebook shows him submitting his credentials.

burThe picture was captioned: “Receiving credentials from incoming Burundi Ambassador to Kenya H.E Maj. Gen. Godefroid Niombare at State House, Nairobi.”

In his home country, he was hailed as a charismatic leader who raised the profile of the Burundi embassy in Kenya. Some of his other descriptions include “a disciplined, lucid, flexible man and a true believer.”

After leaving the Nairobi post, Niyombare was appointed High Commander of the Burundian army and intelligence chief.

He was fired by Nkurunziza as intelligence chief in February this year, reportedly for not towing the line in the unconstitutional third term talk.

Ironically, Niyombare in 2010 announced the arrest of 12 soldiers near Lake Tanganyika planning a coup to overthrow President Nkurunziza.
