A few months ago, it was reported that Kenya Tourism Board had rejected a proposal by Premier League side West Bromwich Albion F.C to be one of their sponsors.
The deal would have seen Kenya’s branding on some of West Brom’s training kits and signage at their stadium and training ground. ‘Visit Kenya’ messages would also be displayed on the pitchside boards during the team’s home games.
Our biggest competitor for tourists,Tanzania, was apparently presented a similar deal by Sunderland, and they took it. As their players trained for yesterday’s Manchester City game, they wore kits branded ‘Visit Tanzania’.
It’s not clear how much money changed hands, but I think it’s totally worth it, considering the popularity of the EPL.
Perhaps West Brom is not the best side, but I would love to see ‘Visit Kenya’ or ‘Tour Masai Mara’ messages on the jersey of a big club.
Here are some photos from Sunderland.
