Two suspects accused of robbery with violence staged a dramatic escape from Ruiru police station on Wednesday morning by tricking a police officer who they later strangled.
The two were supposed to be arraigned in Court on Wednesday, November 20, just a few hours before they escaped.
According to the police, one of the suspects, Wycliffe Kori Achola, knocked on the door of the cells and told the officer on duty that he had a running stomach and wanted to be escorted to the toilet at around 5 am.
Constable Christopher Mwangombe opened the door and was reportedly attacked by the prisoner who wrestled him to the ground before he was joined by a second robbery with violence suspect, Mr Dennis Atitwa Atenya.
The suspects strangled the officer before jumping over the wall to escape. It was not immediately established where the other officer, Constable Julia Nduta, was during the escape.
The two had been charged by detectives from Githurai Kimbo police station but were remanded in Ruiru after their first appearance in court.
Police said a manhunt was launched immediately but by Wednesday evening, the suspects were yet to be arrested.
The latest escape brings to at least 22, the number of robbery suspects from Kiambu County who have escaped from police custody in the last eight months.
