Residents of Thome in Kasarani expressed shock after a boy was bitten on the toes and around his eyes by a rat.

The 7-year-old boy was taken to Kiambu Level Five Hospital for treatment on Wednesday after sustaining injuries. Reports indicate that the rat bit the boy as he slept next to his mother and brother at their home in Thome area.

The boy’s mother, Evelyn Odhiambo, was also shocked, as she noted that the rodent only attacked the boy, sparing her and the victim’s sibling who was asleep on the same bed.

“We are three in the family and we all sleep in the same bed. Up to now, I still do not understand how rats would eat him up,” Ms Odhiambo told the Star.

The boy was treated and discharged.

Area residents found the incident peculiar and linked it to witchcraft. Others advised the family to seek divine intervention.

“I have never heard of a rat chewing a human being. The family should ask for prayers from religious leaders because that is unusual,” one resident said.

Good Samaritans helped the family relocate to another house to avoid similar incidents in the future.
