A man and his wife are in custody of police in Kisumu for allegedly burning their son’s hands over a lost mobile phone.

Nyando Police Boss Leonard Matete said both parents were questioned on suspicion that they conspired to commit the crime.

The 14-year-old boy is a Class 8 pupil and is set to sit for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exams from Tuesday next week. The minor’s mother died when he was 1 month old and has been living with his father Ojoro Omuya and stepmother Rose Akoth.

The parents are said to have accused their son of stealing a mobile phone.

Citizen Digital reports that Ms Akoth then wrapped her step-son’s hands with a newspaper, tied and doused it with paraffin before setting it on fire.

According to Nyando Police Boss, Akoth and her husband Ojoro Omuya tried to coach the boy on what he should say to the police.

Police took the boy to hospital for treatment and he is expected to be moved to a children rescue centre for observation before he sits for the KCPE examinations.
