Machakos Governor and Maendeleo Chap Chap party leader, Alfred Mutua is rooting for a National Economic Forum to explore creative and practical ideas of reviving and improving the country’s economy.

Dr Mutua says it is critically urgent for Kenyan leaders to convene serious talks on how to roll back poverty by enhancing investment and encouraging consumer spending to spur economic growth.

In a press statement released on Sunday, Mutua said enhanced consumer spending will generate demand which in turn will see manufacturing orders increase and generate more employment.

“If for example all businesses in Kenya choose to employ an additional one employee, this would instantly generate one to two million jobs. Although the investor may experience a reduction of sh 10,000-15000 from their monthly profits, the money will not only empower a young person but will also grow the economy,” Mutua stated.

He went on, “when a new person is employed, he or she will pay rent, buy goods, use transportation and so on, which will mean each month there will be an additional sh 10 to 15 billion of consumer money circulating in the country.”

By so doing, Mutua said, leaders will have played a more responsible role than just jumping up and down all over the country in political and social meetings. “Many Kenyans have more and better ideas that they can share and agree as a nation and hence be able to contribute to the agenda by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Vision 2030,” he said.

Governor Mutua has flouted the recent national budget estimates presented by Treasury Cabinet Secretary, Henry Rotich saying the allocation to counties was insufficient. He called on both the Senate and the National Assembly to agree on Division of Revenue Bill to ensure allocations to counties meet the minimum constitutional threshold of 15 percent of the total budget.
