A domestic dispute has ended in tragedy after a man committed suicide at Eburru trading centre in Gilgil.

The deceased, a 27-year-old Boda Boda operator, reportedly hanged himself on a tree within his in-laws compound after he was barred from taking his wife back home.

The man had gone to his in-laws to pick his wife who had fled from their matrimonial home due to irreconcilable differences.

An area resident, Adam Kiragu, said the deceased had quarreled with his wife who left him to live with her parents a month ago.

Mr. Kiragu added that the in-laws were opposed to the idea of letting their daughter go back to him saying he had not reformed in his wayward ways.

“He left the home but promised them he will be around for the night only for his body to be found Thursday morning hanging in one of the trees in the compound,” he said.

Police have since launched investigations into the incident as leaders in the area decried the rising cases of suicide among the youth.

A local leader Anita Wangeci said the institution of marriage especially among youths was under threat and required collective efforts to rescue it.

According to Wangeci, many young people had resorted to alcohol and drugs use as their unions had become unbearable. She called on church leaders to play their rightful role to guide them during turbulent times.

“The Church should stand up and offer the necessary guidance to our young people who face difficulties in their early years of marriage and by so doing incidences of suicide will be minimized,” she said.
