A Kisumu mother of two on Monday set her house on fire killing herself and her children in Otonglo area, Kisumu County in an apparent murder-suicide.
Twenty-six-year-old Rukia Anyango Wasuna is said to have learned of her husband’s plans to bring in a new wife. Reports indicate that her husband was already living with the second wife in Eldoret where he also works.
Ms Anyango reportedly locked herself and her two kids, Shirleen, 6, and Asman, 2, inside the house before setting it on fire.
According to a neighbour, she arrived home on Monday morning carrying a jerrycan full of petrol which she had bought from a nearby fuelling station.
“She was carrying petrol, but at that time I didn’t quite tell what was in the jerrycan. She then called her two children to come inside the house then she locked it and set it on fire,” said the neighbour.
The neighbour then raised alarm but it was too little too late to save the children as the house was locked from inside and its windows had grills.
“The husband already married a second wife and they have a year-old child in their house in Eldoret. This seems to have angered her because she was told the new wife would be brought to replace her in the Kisumu house this December,” said one of Rukia’s sister-in-law.
The deceased’s relatives and neighbours claimed that she had previously threatened to burn the children alive should her husband continue mistreating her.
“She should have just killed herself and spared the children,” her brother wailed.
“She had informed me about the issues they were having and I told her to be strong. I am deeply saddened by this,” said the woman’s mother, Mrs Sarah Wamboga as she wailed uncontrollably.
Central Kisumu location Chief Simon Osege Orwa said preliminary investigations indicate that the woman’s action was as a result of a domestic disagreement.
Kisumu West OCPD Meshack Kiptum termed the incident a homicide and said investigation had been launched.
