East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Oburu Oginga has lamented the high rate of insecurity in Bondo town following a burglary at his home.
A gang said to be operating in the largest town of Siaya County Wednesday night raided Oburu’s home and made away with more than a thousand chickens.
Dr Oburu, who is the elder brother of Nasa leader Raila Odinga, confirmed the incident and added that his farmhand was killed in a previous incident.
“The insecurity situation in Bondo town has soared to high levels. The thugs raided my home and made away with all the chickens in my farm. They also raided the home of nominated member of the Siaya county assembly Tabu Osewe and also stole all her chicken stock, including other valuables,” he said.
Oburu added, “The other day the thugs butchered an innocent man – my own farm attendant – and dumped his body at a nearby dam.”
He also recalled how a young man was killed in an estate in Bondo town in the full glare of his family members when they were having dinner.
Oburu noted that criminals in the area had become as bold as carrying out the murders just metres away from the police station.
The former assistant minister for finance called for an overhaul of the security system in Bondo, adding that some police officers had been stationed in the area for years without any meaningful impact.
“Bondo is endowed with all manner of security personnel, yet these murders and the worrying security trends increase every other day,” Oburu said.
Maranda police commander Boaz Odero assured officers have launched an operation to weed out the gangs and called on the public to help with information.
