Performing and recording Kenyan songbird Dela Maranga has finally spoken up on recent allegations that she is hooked on hard drugs.
Last month, a local daily pullout reported that during the Coke Studio Premiere party at Kiza Lounge, photographers tried to take pictures of Dela with Homeboyz radio presenters Patricia Kihoro and Mwalimu Rachel but they declined.
“Everyone knows Dela is going through some things. Just the other day she walked into a club in Westlands with ill-fitting baggy clothes that she had to hold to cover her nakedness. She parties real hard, smoking and drinking, and sometimes gets the people around her in real trouble,” SDE quoted a celebrity who was overheard speaking to one of her friends at the same party.
Dela, whose Swahili rendition of Adele’s ‘Hello’ propelled her to the top, has termed the allegations as character assassination.
“A lot has been said about me. Sometimes some things are said that could affect my life. Rumours have been going on that I’m on drugs. I’m not on drugs. That’s not a funny joke about somebody, that’s character assassination.”
She added: “I didn’t take it lightly and at the same time I didn’t want it to affect me. Some people should be more careful about what they write about other people.”
When asked if the rumors had affected her business, the ‘Mafeelings’ singer said:
“So far so good. I’m still gigging, I’m still working, I was on a tour before that. I would say that I haven’t been affected.”
She added: “I think I would have probably gone to court if it started affecting my money.”
