A 23-year-old intern has been arrested for attempting to kill himself inside an Equity Bank hall in Bondo town.

Sylvester Anyiko Majonjo, a Bachelor of Engineering student, worked as a teller at the bank’s Bondo branch.

It is alleged that on Tuesday, Majonjo locked himself inside his booth in the morning, doused petrol on furniture and documents before setting the booth ablaze in what the police said was an attempt to commit suicide.

Bondo OCPD, Paul Kiarie, said the fire was extinguished immediately by Majonjo’s coworkers and the bank police and that no one was injured during the incident.

The suspect, a University of Nairobi student, cited challenges in meeting his family’s needs and work frustrations as motivation for his suicide attempt.

The police boss said preliminary findings revealed that Majonjo was under investigation by the bank after being discovered to have fraudulently transferred Sh200,000 from a customer’s account to his own account on September 23.

The bank also discovered that on diverse dates he had fraudulently deposited more than sh 27 million to various M-Pesa operators in Bondo town but the transactions were successfully reversed.

Equity Bank, Bondo branch corporate manager, Javan Odera, disputed Majonjo’s allegations of work-related frustrations saying their employees are well cared for and even those on attachment like Anyiko are well remunerated.

“This is a boy sponsored by wings to fly where they get all the support required. Even when he is paid well. Unless he has frustrations from home which I do not know, I can say he is relatively comfortable” he explained.
