Tragedy has struck the family of the late Nyeri County governor Nderitu Gachagua following the death of his grandson.
The boy, aged two, was mauled by a pack of six dogs on Thursday in Nyeri Town.
The boy had been playing at the late governor’s home at Ring Road estate when the neighbour’s canines entered the compound and attacked him.
The dogs reportedly made it past a live-wire fence in the 11:30 am incident.
Gachagua’s widow Margaret Karungaru, who lived with the boy, tried to fight off the dogs but she was overpowered. She sustained minor injuries in the process.
Neighbours who responded to her distress calls chased away the dogs and rushed the boy Outspan Hospital.
Sadly, he succumbed to the injuries while undergoing treatment.
Nyeri Deputy Governor Mutahi Kahiga, who spoke on behalf of the family, said police are investigating.
“Police have already started investigations but we also would like to point out that there is a sense of negligence. Owners should watch their dogs keenly,” said Mr Kahiga.
