Residents of Nyahururu, Laikipia County were on Tuesday treated to another ‘snowfall’ as temperatures fell to as low as 4.6°C.

Daily operations in Nyahururu were temporarily interrupted after centimetres of hail covered the Rumuruti-Nyahururu and the Nyahururu-Maralal roads.

The hail, which many mistook for snow, also covered adjacent farms in Sironi, Limunga and Maili Saba villages.

Residents and motorists stopped their daily activities to take pictures of the ‘snow’ and took to social media pages to share the ‘rare’ spectacle.

But the Kenya Meteorological Department has confirmed that the spectacle was as a result of a hailstorm caused when rain clouds form too fast.

For snow to fall, temperatures are usually below 0°C.

The Kenya Met. Department reported the lowest daily minimum temperature of 4.6°C on 27th June recorded at the Nyahururu Meteorological Station.

This is not the first time the Met. Department has dismissed reports of snow in Nyahururu. In 2015, hailstones were experienced in Kinangop, Njabini, and Nyandarua.

The spectacle was also experienced in Nyahururu in 2008.
