Former Devolution Cabinet Secretary Ann Waiguru was yesterday whisked to safety after rowdy youth stormed her political rally in Ndia, Kirinyaga Central.

The Kirinyaga Gubernatorial candidate had finished addressing a campaign rally when alleged supporters of Martha Karua began shouting that she was unwelcome at a Martha Karua and Gitari Gachoki stronghold.

According to a victim of the chaos, identified as Moses Waweru, Waiguru’s bodyguards swiftly swung into action and whisked her to safety when police began shooting in the air to contain the chaos.

The rowdy youths reportedly stoned Waiguru’s campaign vehicle before taking off with the car key.

Waweru, 50, sustained injuries during the chaos and was admitted to a private hospital in Embu County.

He said he was rescued from the angry mob by Waiguru’s bodyguards.

The Kirinyaga gubernatorial seat is one of the hotly contested seats pitting Anne Waiguru against Narc-Kenya’s Martha Karua.

They will face incumbent Governor Joseph Ndathi on August 8.
