Burglars on Saturday broke into the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) in Ranen, Awendo Sub County in Migori County and made away with ‘odd’ items, including the altar wine, hostia (altar bread), and chalice (the wine cup used in the Christian Eucharist).
Church Secretary General Mr Collins Otieno said that the unknown number of thieves also stole a baptism jug and sufurias, adding that the theft was perplexing.
“The thieves broke the door and then they took the items that we use in the Holy Communion and baptism”, Mr Otieno told Radio Ramogi.
Mr Otieno added that they suspect the thieves either consumed the wine or poured it out because they found the emptied bottle in a maize plantation a few meters from the church.
He noted that the theft of the items has undermined some of the important church activities.
The church has appealed the suspects to return the stolen items, adding that they will not victimise them as a church.
The incident was reported to Ranen Administration Police (AP) camp and the area village elder.
Awendo Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) Mr Dan Kinywa said they would launch investigations.
