A huge consignment of foreign currency disguised as collector’s items was on Thursday intercepted by Kenya Revenue Authority officers.

The Sh1.1 million worth of cash was in four foreign currencies; Congolese Franc, Ugandan shillings, Eritrean Nakfa and Burundian Franc.

The consignment was nabbed by the tax man at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on December 26.

In a statement, KRA said the monies were packed in several denominations of notes and coins and consisted of 2,350,000 Congolese Franc, 21,200,000 Ugandan shillings, 30,154 Eritrean Nakfa and 65,000 Burundian Franc.

KRA further revealed that the consignment was being exported to Fuerth, Germany.

Both KRA and police have launched investigations to establish the source of the money and reason for export.
