A bizarre incident in a courtroom in Kathangacini, Tharaka-Nithi County disrupted a court session on Wednesday when an Administration Police Officer opened fire indiscriminately.
As those present scampered for safety, five suspects facing criminal charges escaped. Two of them were later arrested.
Armed with a G3 rifle, Sergeant Nathan Erupe fired in the air twice, before proceeding to the adjacent shopping centre and fired more rounds in the air, forcing traders to seek refuge in nearby buildings.
Gatunga police boss Hesbon Kandenge said the officer was cornered, arrested and taken into custody at the area police station.
He added that investigations were ongoing to establish the motive behind the incident.
Barely a month ago, another officer based at the Gatunga Police Station stabbed a colleague twice with a knife.
He then snatched his colleague’s pistol and started looking for a senior officer at the market centre.
He was arrested and arraigned.
