A fourth-year student at Kisii University main campus was shot in the head by a stray bullet on Monday, October 17, as students went on the rampage to protest a new rule on fee payment.

Following the two-day unrest, the institution has been closed indefinitely.

In a memo signed by acting Registrar Academic Affairs Joash Kerongo, the students were instructed to vacate the university compound by 3pm on Tuesday.

On Monday, ten students were arrested for burning down the fee collection office at the main campus.

The students allegedly used a petrol bomb to set the office ablaze; and also lit bonfires along the busy Kisii-Kilgoris road, disrupting traffic for several hours.

A combined team of Administration and Kenya Police officers engaged them in running battles.

The students were protesting the introduction of new fee payment policy that requires students who had not cleared fees by October 15, 2015 to defer their classes until next semester.

They demand that the university withdraws the date set for clearing fees before sitting for exams
