The Nairobi – Mombasa superhighway may become a reality in the next few years.
Last week, the government announced plans to transform the two lane highway into a six lane superhighway within the next 5 years. With the pace of doing business in Kenya, 2022 seems like an overly ambitious timeline, but at least there’s a will.
A US engineering firm has now emerged as the frontrunner to finance construction of the mega project. Bechtel Corporation is already in talks with the government.
According to State House spokesman Manoah Esipisu, the California based firm has written a letter of interest to be part of the major road project.
“We are hopeful that these discussions will bear fruit, and that Kenya will soon enjoy the new infrastructure on the Nairobi-Mombasa route. More importantly, though, this is a show of continued massive international investor confidence in our economy and our country,” Mr Esipisu said on Sunday.
Apart from road infrastructure, Bechtel has operations in mining, oil and gas and nuclear technology.
