A historic true life film based on the life of veteran Kenyan boxer Conjestina Achieng’ is in the pre production stages.
The biopic is produced by award winning South African actress and producer, Terry Pheto, who starred in the Oscar winning movie “TsoTsi,” “Mandela,” “Long Walk To Freedom”, “A United Kingdom” (starring David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike) and “Ayanda.”
The historic film will also be co-produced by Rocque pictures( Kenya), Story Republic ( Nigeria) and The Polkadot Factory(UK).
The film will chronicle Conjestina’s meteoric rise to international boxing success and her subsequent struggle with her mental health which brought her career to a halt.
Producers are currently set on an open casting call in Kenya to find an actress to play the role of Conjestina, the first African woman to win an international boxing championship.
We cannot confirm if the filmmakers have been in touch with Conjestina or her family, as this could go along way in helping Conjestina as she continues her recovery in rehab.
Nigerian actor, OC Ukeje has been cast to star in the movie.
“I was moved when I heard Conjestina’s story and I said to myself that this is one story I would love to tell. The fact that it’s an international collaboration makes it even better,” Ukeje said.
Open casting for Conjestina’s role is scheduled for January 2017.
