The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has nominated Court of Appeal Judge David Maraga for the post of Chief Justice.
The announcement was made on Thursday afternoon.
Justice Maraga,64, was not considered a favourite, but went on to beat Justices Smokin Wanjala and Alnashir Visram who were seen as having better chances.
Justice Maraga holds a Bachelor of Laws degree, LL.B, and a Masters of Law, LL.M, from the University of Nairobi. Before his appointment as judge, he was in active private practice for over 25 years.
He was first appointed judge of the High Court in 2003, and then Court of Appeal in 2011.
If approved by the President and the National Assembly, Justice Maraga will serve for roughly 5 years.
