David Rudisha, who is the world champion and world record holder, became the first man to defend the 800m title in five decades. He timed a season’s best of 1min 42.15sec.
For a moment, it looked like another Kenyan, Alfred Kipketer, would take it. He started with a lot of energy putting some distance between himself and everyone else.
However, Rudisha and the rest of the runners caught up with him in the final lap. Algeria’s reigning Olympic 1500m champion Taoufik Makhloufi took silver, with American Clayton Murphy taking bronze.
