A police constable is under investigation after he went berserk and tried to shoot his colleagues and members of the public in Kwale County on Monday.
Hans Mwambuyu, a police constable based at Diani Police Station in Kwale county, attempted to grab his colleague’s G3 rifle in vain and rushed to his house to get his own firearm but was subdued by other officers.
Sources at the station who did not want to be named said the officer had threatened them while drunk.
“Nyinyi mtashangaa. Nitachukua hizo bunduki niwapepete kuliko ile ya Kapenguria. Endeleeni kunichezea ,” he was quoted as having said in Swahili.
Which loosely translates to: “You will be shocked. I will take those guns and carry out an attack worse than the one in Kapenguria if you continue joking with me.”
The policeman recently graduated from Kenya Police Training College in Kiganjo.
According to one of his colleagues, Constable Jane Gatune, the officer first assaulted a resident before he went for the gun in order to shoot him.
The incident comes barely a week after an attack at Kapenguria police station where seven police officers were killed by a rogue cop before he was gunned down.
