In what it is calling ‘rationalizing of its broadcasting division’, NMG has announced that will shut down Nation FM and QFM in Kenya, and KFM in Rwanda.
QTV has also been taken off air but they say it will be merged with NTV to create a stronger multi-lingual channel.
“Regrettably this will result in a reduction of our workforce through job redundancies. We do recognise that today’s announcement will be difficult for the affected employees and their families. This exercise will be carried out with due respect to our employees and within the Kenyan laws. We will strive to provide all the necessary support to help them manage through this transition.” NMG CEO Joe Muganda said in a statement.
Despite having a vibrant newspaper, NMG has previously showed signs that it is struggling with its radio business. Nation FM was some years back re-branded to Easy FM, but would later revert to Nation FM.
A few notable names have left or have been fired in recent months, among them Sanaipei Tande, Ciru Muriuki, Antoneosoul and Sheila Mwanyigha.
