A man shocked a Mombasa Court after claiming that God ordered him to take his life by jumping into the Indian Ocean.
Benson Muigai from Kiambu County was answering to attempted suicide charges.
“I am a servant of God and I was sent to Mombasa all the way from Kiambu County to take my life at Likoni ferry crossing,” Muigai said.
Mr. Muigai pleaded guilty to the charges but insisted that he was acting on guidance from God.
“God told me to come all the way here and take my life in the ocean. I am new in Mombasa and I only came here for this reason,” he added.
Resident Magistrate Lillian Lewa ordered Muigai be subjected to a psychiatric test to determine whether he was fit to stand trial.
“Let the accused be subjected to a mental check-up before we can give a verdict,” ruled Magistrate Lewa.
Muigai was accused that on May 31, he attempted to commit suicide by jumping from a moving ferry in Likoni area. The suspect was rescued by divers after plunging into the waters.
The accused is expected back in court on August 12 when the judgement will be delivered.
