There was chaos in Likoni on Monday as thousands of commuters were stranded following a ferry crisis.

The situation worsened after MV Kwale, one of the two operational ferries got stuck on a ramp on the Mombasa Island side leading to a stampede. At least 11 people were injured as passengers rushed to board MV Nyayo.

By Friday, two ferries had broken down causing kilometres-long traffic snarl-up and congestion of commuters at the holding area. The Likoni channel is used by 300,000 passengers and 6,000 vehicles daily.
