Immediate former Inspector General of police David Kimaiyo was one of the government officials who received the blue verified badge from Twitter at the height of the Westgate attack. Others were Ole Lenku, Dennis Itumbi, State House Press and a few other accounts.
For some reason however, Twitter decided to take away this ‘honour’ when he was sacked or retired last week, depending on who you ask.
The main purpose of the verified badge is to identify the real accounts of public figures, especially those at risk of impersonation. It is not custom of Twitter to reverse the verification even when the person loses position or influence.
It’s not clear what really happened in Kimaiyo’s case.
Joseph ole Lenku meanwhile maintains his blue checkmark badge.
