It may surprise you that East Africa’s most profitable company Safaricom has a bigger operating budget than some countries.

If the mobile giant was a country, it would be richer than Burundi. The small East African country has a GDP of about KSh 241 Billion ($2.72 billion), against Safaricom’s market capitalization of nearly KSh 500 billion.

Here are some stats.

Safaricom Revenues 2013-2014 – Ksh 144.7 billion
Burundi Government Budget Revenues For 2014 – Ksh 74.30 billion
Burundi Government Budget Expenditure For 2014 – Ksh 81 billion

Safaricom Present Market Capitalization Ksh 486 billion
Burundi 2014 GDP Ksh 269 billion

If you think Burundi is in a unique situation, you may want to know that Kenya trails many big US companies in terms of net worth.

Apple is probably the best case.

Apple Revenues 2013 – US$ 171 billion

Kenya Government Budget Revenues For 2014 – 13.33 US$ billion
Kenya Government Budget Expenditure For 2014 – US$ 16.67 billion

Apple Present Market Capitalization – US$ 585 billion
Kenya 2014 GDP – US$ 63 billion

But again, if Apple was a country, it would be among the 30 richest in the world.
