A facility for junior offenders which hosts over 300 boys has circumcised 55 inmates irrespective of tribe.
Kakamega Borstal Institution circumcised boys aged between 15 – 18 following the customs of the local communities of initiating boys every two years. The ceremony was conducted by Aphia Plus Western on parents’ consent.
Borstal officer in charge Japheth Onchiri joined hand praising this initiation saying the facility was established to do more than just issuing correctional lessons. “Our institution is also expected to shape the inmates cultural aspects to allow the fit well in society after serving their terms. Ours is a medical, not the traditional form of circumcision,” he said.
Meanwhile the boys were happy to be part of the exercise. When asked the importance of circumcision, one of the boys erupted: “So as to become a man”.
