A petition is currently live on avaaz.org urging President Uhuru to give elephants presidential security, and arrest poachers in the backdrop of Satao’s killing. The petition was started by Camilla Le May, a Kenyan wildlife lover and has already received over 15,000 signatures.
It aims at reaching 20,000 signatures, hoping the President will finally take action. The petitioner reminds the president of his father’s deed when faced with a similar situation many years ago.
“Your late Father, the former President, His Excellency Jomo Kenyatta, wisely placed Ahmed, the splendid bull of Marsabit under his protection by presidential decree in 1970.” it reads.

We are shocked and deeply saddened to hear that one of the world’s last big tuskers, Satao (pictured above), has been killed by poachers along with his 5 askaris. This comes too soon after another iconic elephant, Mountain Bull, was also dispatched for his ivory.
Poaching is out of control – it is both a national and international crisis. Only around 11 of these rare tuskers remain in Tsavo, Kenya. This small gene pool needs to be preserved.
Kenya is privileged to be home to the last of these tuskers. It is a heritage to be protected for future generations. Please act immediately to protect Tsavo’s tuskers with armed guards for each.
The KWS and private ranger forces are doing their utmost to protect Kenya’s wildlife against well-armed poachers and criminal cartels that support them. Rangers risk their lives every day. They need our support and to be equipped to effectively combat the present intensity of the invasion by ever better armed and brazen poachers.
Please invest more in the ranger force, arming them so that they can effectively fight this underground war.
We ask that known traffickers of ivory, rhino horn and other illegal wildlife parts be arrested without delay and tried for their crimes against wildlife. Presently courts have not been enforcing the law.
Kenya is now the main hub through which the continent’s illegal ivory is leaving Africa. Please can you deal with this unacceptable situation.
Your late Father, the former President, His Excellency Jomo Kenyatta, wisely placed Ahmed, the splendid bull of Marsabit under his protection by presidential decree in 1970.
We respectfully ask you to do the same for these last few rare and magnificent tuskers in Tsavo. Please do everything in your power to preserve them. It would be an irreversible tragedy for the world if we lost them.
