The title for the largest shopping mall in East Africa has been taken away from the under construction Garden City Mall, with Centum Investment – majority owned by Chris Kirubi, beginning construction of a bigger mall in Runda.
Dubbed Two Rivers, the shopping complex will be situated at the heart of the affluent Runda, Gigiri, Muthaiga and Nyali neighbourhoods. It will have a floor space of 58,000 square metres, with Garden City having only 50,000. The entire complex, which will also include a 5 star hotel, residential apartments and an office park, will be located on a 100 acre piece of land, a few minutes from the UN complex and several embassies. The whole project is estimated to cost around Sh60 billion.
The shopping mall, which entails phase one, is scheduled for completion in October next year, just a few months after Garden City Mall. Already, French supermarket chain Carrefour has booked 100,000 square feet, or roughly 16% of the mall. This will be their third country of operation in Africa, after Egypt and Morocco.
